• The most common type of weed problem is curly leaf pond weed.  Aquathol K, Reward or Sonar are good solutions to this common weed problem.

  • The best aeration system is one that works under the water.  These systems take the bad or cold water from the bottom, and move it to the top.  This "turns the pond" over.

  • There is no such thing as 'seaweed' in lakes or ponds. The most common types of weeds in the Midwest are curly leaf, sago, and small pondweed, water milfoil, coontail, elodea, water buttercup and cattails.

  • You can help keep your pond clean by controlling the algae after the weeds have been treated.

  • You have to wait for warmer water temperatures before you can successfully treat weeds with chemicals or herbicides.  The ideal water temperature for treatment is 65 degrees.

  • Keeping an aerator running all winter will prevent fish kills during the winter.  Running it during the summer will help prevent summer fish kills and help with algae control.

  • The state of Illinois defines water of 5 acres or more as a lake, under 5 acres is considered a pond.
